A Tale of Two Cultures: Embracing My Russian-Dominican Identity
Growing up in a household where my parents hailed from Russia and the Dominican Republic, I have been fortunate enough to experience the richness of two contrasting cultures. While my mom's Russian heritage exudes strictness and order, my dad's Dominican background radiates a laid-back and vibrant atmosphere. The duality of my cultural identity has shaped my perspectives both inside and outside the confines of my home.
Within the confines of our home, I find myself more closely aligned with Russian culture due to my mother's influence. Our house is a testament to her unwavering commitment to cleanliness and organization. Every nook and cranny is meticulously maintained, reflecting the Russian penchant for tidiness. Moreover, the culinary landscape of our home is a delightful blend of Dominican flavors infused with my mother's Russian culinary skills. It is an amalgamation of two distinct culinary traditions that tantalize my taste buds with their unique and harmonious fusion.
Our interior atmosphere is significantly influenced by religion. My parents are both devoted Christians, and our house is a haven for the faith. I've grown older, my attitude toward religious traditions has become more casual, which from time to time makes me different from my parents. But the respect and affection we have for one another as a family have not been hampered by our different theological perspectives.
Stepping outside the walls of my home is like entering a different world altogether. As I venture into the Dominican Republic, the cultural disparities become evident. The vibrancy and liveliness of the Dominican culture are apparent in the bustling streets, the vibrant music that permeates the air, and the warmth of its people. It is a chaotic yet enchanting world that I proudly call my own.
Living in a close-knit community of PuntaCana has its advantages and challenges. Familiar faces dot the bustling town, creating a sense of belonging and familiarity. However, the smallness of the community can sometimes restrict personal growth and limit my sense of exploration. On the other hand I have forged strong friendships between me and my friends no matter our differences in cultures and mindset.
The intersection of my Russian and Dominican heritage has bestowed upon me a unique cultural identity. It has enabled me to navigate and appreciate the contrasting aspects of both cultures. While the strictness of Russian culture taught me discipline and order, the laid-back Dominican approach instilled in me a love for spontaneity and celebration.
I've grown to see that various cultures work in harmony to create a beautiful tapestry of customs, values, and experiences rather than feeling torn between them. This fusion has made me into the person I am today, one who embraces the greatest aspects of both cultures and values the depth of my dual background.
The inspiration of going into college to the United States is because of my mother. My mom is such an inspiration to me because she when she was 16 she was also transferred to a foster family and lived alone in college, away from her parents. She went to the United States not only as one of the first from Russia, but went to 2 colleges at the same time.
